Third Man debuted its Record Booth, a refurbished 1947 Voice-o-Graph machine that records up to 2 minutes of audio and dispenses a one-oF-a-kind 6" phonograph disc to the user. Whether it be a song, a message to a lover, an audio postcard, or just curiosity in a process that has mystified so many folks for ages, the ability to "hear yourself as others hear you" is not only a tagline here... it's an invitation, a charge, a call to arms.
Visitors are encouraged to convert their booth recordings to MP3's and submit to Third Man to be featured on our Record Booth Soundcloud playlist. Take a listen below.
Frequently Asked Questions...
How much does it cost to record a song?
$20
Do I have to make an appointment for the booth?
No. The booth operates strictly on a first-come, first-serve basis during our regular store hours. Sometimes a small line builds up, but it moves really quickly.
How much time fits on the record?
Approximately 150 seconds, or two-and-a-half minutes. This can vary, ever so slightly.
Do you have instruments available in the shop for me to play in the booth?
We have a house acoustic guitar available for use in the booth. Don’t hesitate to bring your own instruments for your performance though.
Are there any restrictions on what I can do in the booth?
We’ve had marriage proposals, one-act plays, last will and testaments, Willie Nelson, jokes and everything else in between in the booth. Be creative!
I want to share my recording with the world? How can I do that?
Email inquiries@thirdmanrecords.com with a digitized version of your record in mp3 format and we’ll be glad to host it at TMR’s Voice-o-Graph section on our website.
I have a question that’s not answered here. What do I do?
Email nashvillestore@thirdmanrecords.com and we’ll do our best to answer any question you may have about the booth or the recording process.
